Collisions Lab

Crashes in Two Dimensions Abstract: This lab was led to research the speculations of preservation of force and dynamic vitality in various sorts of 2D impacts. So as to do this, both a flexible and inelastic impact was directed on an air table with pucks. A video was taken and dissected to decide speed, taking into account future finding of force and active vitality esteems. By finding these, it was conceivable to figure out which sort of crash occurred. With low estimations of progress in force and motor vitality that happened in flexible impacts, it is comprehended that both are saved in this kind of collision. However, in the inelastic crash, force is preserved while dynamic vitality isn't. Conceivable mistake in this lab may have come about because of the disregard of rubbing and rotational dynamic vitality. By and large, be that as it may, the outcomes coordinated up well with the normal qualities. The target of the lab was along these lines met. Objective: The goal of this lab i s to help that force will be rationed in all types of impacts, and that motor vitality will be moderated uniquely in flexible crashes. Materials: Materials utilized in this lab were a camcorder, an air table with pucks and Velcro groups, and Logger Pro software.Procedure: Videos of crashes of air hockey pucks will be recorded onto the computer’s hard drive. Two distinct sorts of impacts will be broke down. The primary will be almost flexible, with every puck going separate bearings after the impact. The other sort is totally inelastic with each buck bearing Velcro to remain together upon crash. The main crash requires first setting an inception on the video. Utilizing the Set Scale device, a separation scale will be set. Direction of the inside puck is stamped and a self-assertive time is picked at which information will start being extracted.Points will at that point be included each casing in turn until enough estimations are taken when the crash. This is then rehashed on t he episode puck. This is accomplished for both the inside and the white dab on every puck. This information is consequently gone into Logger Pro. The informational indexes are then diagramed. Straight lines are fitted to the charts to decide the speeds , wich will be utilized to decide rakish speed of the puck’s turn. Another video will be broke down partially two. In this impact the situation of the focal point of mass of the two pucks will be followed, alongside the situation of the focal point of one of the pucks. This will bring about 8 arrangements of information focuses. Direct fits are utilized to decide the speed segments of each. Sweep is then used to figure rakish speed. While protection of force was upheld through both flexible and inelastic conditions, preservation of vitality was bolstered uniquely through versatile crashes. Rotational active vitality additionally assumed a job in the outcomes. The speculations are profoundly upheld because of the low measure of blunder present in this lab.In figuring the conclusive outcomes of active vitality and force, mass and speed estimations were utilized. Force and dynamic vitality are factors subject to those of mass and speed, the autonomous factors. Since the diagrams were position versus time diagrams, the speed could be inferred by taking a gander at the slant. Since the adjustment in force in the flexible condition was a generally little change, energy in this crash was demonstrated to be moderated. Active vitality was additionally moderated, as is normal for versatile impacts, with another extremely little change. As expected, force was likewise monitored for the inelastic crash. In spite of the fact that the change in motor vitality was little, the way that there was some change bolsters it being an inelastic crash. Vitality was not rationed, true to form. Some mistake in the lab could be added to the about (yet not exactly) frictionless air tables. Indeed, even slight grinding may have influenced the information. Another contributing component to generally speaking mistake could be the rotational motor vitality not represented in the flexible impact, seeing as vitality would have been added to the system. This blunder could be diminished or killed by considering rotational dynamic vitality and erosion. End: The target of this lab was to help the speculations of protection of force in both flexible and inelastic crashes, and to help the hypothesis of motor vitality preservation in versatile impacts. Since the adjustments in the estimations of dynamic vitality and force were so little, they demonstrated in consequential and the speculations were upheld. In this way, the goal of the lab was met.

Data Center Fabric How Facebook Redesigned its Data Center Network

Data Center Fabric How Facebook Redesigned its Data Center Network Facebook has built a reputation of being a pioneer and innovator, introducing new concepts that eventually stick. In fact, it is safe to say that Mark Zuckerberg’s baby was primarily instrumental in changing the face of the internet as we know it today, fully realizing the potential and meaning of the word “social” in social networking. Ever since founding in 2004, Facebook has continued introducing new ideas and concepts, and one of the more recent ones is its new data center networking architecture, which it called “data center fabric”. © Shutterstock.com | Mark AgnorIn this article, youll learn 1) why Facebook changed its data center architecture, 2) how the new data center fabric works, and 3) what are the benefits.A CALL FOR CHANGEHumans, by nature, are never satisfied. They are bound to look for something more â€" bigger, better, faster. This is actually a good thing, since it also forces developers to look for better ways to offer their services and products. Despite the fact that Facebook is now one of the largest and most successful businesses in the world, the brilliant team behind it is continuously working hard to improve its features and offerings.Facebook reported a total of 1.44 billion monthly active users in its First Quarter report for 2015. That is a lot of people making use of Facebook, so we can only imagine the demand in terms of performance. Several years down the road, that number will definitely grow exponentially, and so Facebook is taking steps to optimize its internal application efficienc y and to keep up with that growth. The end user normally does not care about what goes on behind the scenes. As long as he can log on to his Facebook account, post status updates, read whatever appears on his Timeline, stream videos and whatever else one normally does on Facebook, then they could not care less about the technical stuff. However, it pays to get even a little bit of an idea on what makes Facebook work, and that is mostly down to its data center networking architecture. The Old DesignThe design of the previous data architecture used by Facebook is hierarchical.According to Najam Ahmad, the Director of Network Engineering in Facebook, Facebook’s data center networking used to follow the server clusters approach. It involved groupings of many machines and equipment, which are the clusters. There was nothing really wrong with it, and it was actually working quite fine, but there were several points that they thought could have been better. One particular point he cited was the limitation brought about by the size of the switches that are available. As the usage increased, there was a corresponding rise in the demand for a bigger switch. It was directly proportional: more users meant more bandwidth, which means more racks added to the cluster which, in turn, calls for a bigger switch. They can, of course, always buy a bigger switch, but there is that one possibility that they might have the biggest switch, and still they would need another, bigger one. It will just go on and on. Sooner or later, they will hit what Ahmad called a “dead end”.There is also the issue of Facebook being at the mercy of its vendors supplying the networking devices needed to maintain its data center. There are only a limited number of vendors for huge networking devices, and there is that great possibility that there will no longer be a vendor who will be able to supply a network device or switch that will be able to accommodate Facebook’s ever-growing clusters.Speed was also be compromised. The bandwidth infrastructure is bound to suffer in terms of speed when there are simply too many ports operating. There is a risk of overload or oversubscription and, as most of us now know from personal experience, overloads can lead to potential failures of hardware and software performance. Thus, this called for a change, something that will address this issue and actually provide more benefits to all users. Hence, the Data Center Fabric.THE DATA CENTER FABRICInstead of a hierarchical system that has the risk of being oversubscribed, the new design turned the whole Facebook data center into a single high-performance network. The role of the data center fabric is simple: to enable Facebook to account for, and handle, all the traffic it gets, without its system slowing down. Basically, it is tasked to distribute traffic in the data center of Facebook and, in the event that something goes wrong in the data center, perform the necessary repairs or fixes. In the ne w design, Facebook has decided to veer away from its server cluster approach and, instead, make use of a core-and-pod approach where the groupings of machines and equipment are replaced by smaller physical pods. This is not really an entirely new approach, since it is also used by Google and eBay. Facebook just came up with its own redesign concept that serves its specific needs and user demands. In this design, “core” refers to the data center network core. The standard unit of network, compute and storage is a server pod â€" which is described by Ahmad as “just like a layer3 micro-cluster” â€" and within each pod are servers or racks. These identical server pods are built for high-performance connectivity among them within the data center, with each server pod served by four fabric switches, also known as “Six-Packs”. These fabric switches carry with it the same features and advantages that the old design for server rack TOR uplinks had. Thanks to these switches, every node on the network is connected, and can share data easily. It also allowed room for scalability, in the event that there is a need to do so in the future. Essentially, one server pod has 4 fabric switches and a corresponding 48 top of rack (TOR) switches. That is an impressive drop from the previous Facebook data center design, which involved a pod size consisting of 255 racks.Instead of moving on to a larger switch to accommodate increasing bandwidth and power usage, the action taken will be the deployment of pods. Basically, they can deploy as many pods as they like, or as needed. This is quite the more preferred setup, since there is no limit to how much and how often the pods are deployed; unless, of course, you run out of power, or there is no longer any physical space available. As explained by the designers of the data center fabric, they created four independent control “planes” of spine switches, and each of these switches are made to be scalable up to 48 independent d evices. Of course, the scalability of these devices are only within the plane they are in. One pod has four fabric switches, and each of these switches will then connect to each spine switch that is also within the same plane. These pods and planes make up the modular network, which contains hundreds of thousands of servers. The infrastructure design philosophy of Facebook is pretty simple: for it to be able to move fast and support the rapid growth of both “machine to user” and “machine to machine” traffic. The latter is what is addressed by the current shifts and changes made to Facebook’s data centers.BENEFITS OF THE DATA CENTER FABRICChange is good, but how good are they, exactly? What are the improvements that we can expect from the redesigned architecture?Data center space is maximized. This pertains to both virtual space and physical space. The new design will help Facebook make better use of its current data space. It will no longer be limited by the size of the avail able switches, because it has shifted to deploying pods instead.Unlike the clusters, the pods are much smaller, so they can efficiently fit into pretty much any data center floor plan. It also dispenses with the need to look for and secure larger switches, because the four fabric switches that are required are only of basic or average size.Worries about physical space are also lessened considerably, if not completely eliminated. Just think: there is no longer a need to map out a floor plan for the data center, figuring out where to physically put which machine. The Data Center Fabric already provides a virtual layout of all the physical machines, and all that is needed to be done is to follow that layout.Provision of room for growth. In every aspect of the data center fabric’s design, it is to be noted that scalability was always taken into consideration. It was designed to be highly modular, so scaling capacity is facilitated within the framework. Scalability can be accomplished b y adding server pods, edge pods, spine switches, edge switches, and scale uplinks. In order to make room for gradual scalability, in anticipation of increased user demand (and it will happen, if the current trend continues), the entire network was designed as an end-to-end non-oversubscribed environment. This allows Facebook to increase its capacity bit by bit, or in greater leaps, depending on what the circumstances demand.Simple, robust and modular internal architecture.Contrary to initial reactions to Facebook’s new data center fabric, the new design is actually simple and robust. The data center fabric was built by the engineering team by using a routing protocol in the form of standard BGP4. The connectivity requirements from core to pod and vice versa are kept as generic as possible. This is to ensure design freedom, in case there is a need to change the technology used in the pods in the future. (At the rate that technology is changing, there is a high probability of that ha ppening.) The in-house developers alsoproudly claim to have stuck to using “only the minimum necessary features” again, for scalability purposes, as well as ensure performance is optimized.Port density was one of the issues encountered in the previous design and, since that is already addressed in the new core-and-pod approach of the data center fabric by making the port density of the fabric switches significantly smaller, it is certainly something to be happy about. In the cluster approach, one of the pet peeves of anyone maintaining the physical data center, is having to deal with a complex and often confusing cabling infrastructure. Too many equipment and machines connected together by wires and cables can be a source of headaches. The new Data Center Fabric lessened this problem somewhat: cables are shorter, there are less machines involved, and there’s no complicated network of wires and cables. This also results to a reduction of the time it takes for the flow of work to be completed. The Data Center Fabric was first implemented in Facebook’s data center facility in Altoona, and results show that the length of time for its site network turn-up is considerably shorter.Better network performance. The network performance is also scaled up, since uplink capacity on the fabric switches of the pods are reserved for every downlink port to a top of rack switch. The uniform or identical design of the pods and how they are made to connect together also contribute greatly to upping the performance of the network. This modular network can be scaled to “multi-petabit bisection bandwidth”, so oversubscription is not going to be an issue.Improved external connectivity. The data center fabric also paid attention to external connectivity by having a number of edge pods that can provide up to 7.68Tbps on their data center sites. These edge pods are also scalable to 100G. External connectivity is further enhanced by assigning higher port speeds.Better performance o f applications. It is a fact that an application will only perform as well as the network. Even if the application is excellent, if there are network problems, then users cannot make the most of its features. This limitation is addressed by the new data center fabric, which allows application developers to develop apps outside of the more limiting cluster-type environment. The result would be more flexible, faster and better applications.Simple to operate and low-maintenance.This is primarily an advantage for the engineers of Facebook. By nature, systems and networks are complex. However, thanks to automation and design principles, the level of complexity can be greatly reduced.Usually, problems or issues may arise within the network, and the engineers would get down to fixing the problem. The Data Center Fabric was built with an exclusive configuration-management software, which is able to automatically configure a white box in accordance with the specifications of Facebook. The engi neers are no longer required to be on hand to tweak or adjust anything. The same is true with the scaling process. The engineers no longer have to physically and personally deploy more pods, or add more switches or devices to the data center. The software will also do the work. It will recognize the need for new devices and adds what is required. It will then automatically recognize the new addition and set it up or configure it â€" again, conforming to Facebook’s specs. The engineers are also spared from having to manually troubleshoot problematic boxes. The configuration-management software is also able to simply put the problematic box “out of commission” and create a new one. It’s like wiping the slate clean and starting afresh.Cost and functions streamlining.Think of all the money that goes in purchasing or leasing space for your data center. If you have so many machines of large sizes, you would naturally require a large space to hold everything in. The Data Center Fabri c’s use of small pods is certainly more physical space-efficient, so that is certainly a source of cost savings.Similarly, engineers no longer have to devote most of their work hours monitoring the data center. Since the Data Center Fabric is pretty much self-regulating, thanks to the configuration-management software, they can concentrate on more, newer projects instead. The devices are smaller, and they are simpler. Thus, they are easier to troubleshoot. There is really no need to bring in the “big guns” and spend a lot of money to fix massive problems, since they can be taken care of at the lower level.Ready sources of devices and components. In the previous architecture, one of the stumbling blocks was the limited number of sources of the large-sized networking devices for the clusters. Since the components in the Data Center Fabric are small to mid-size, there are multiple sources or vendors to choose from.Normally, upgrading your data center also entails upgrading to high- end hardware. The simplicity of the new Data Center Fabric made it possible for Facebook to stick to simple (and less expensive) hardware.Facebook’s network engineering team succeeded in creating a data networking architecture that is effective and efficient, while keeping things simple. Although implementation is still on a limited scale, we can definitely expect it to be fully operational in all of Facebook’s data centers. The initial reaction of many is that the new design is specific only to Facebook. For now, perhaps, it is, but there is no doubt that it may also be applicable to other enterprises and companies. After all, if you take note of the principles behind it, they apply to pretty much any data center, not just Facebook’s.

The self-assessment should take place within a week. The classes and meetings should be within a month. Article I found an article by Jane Redfern-Jones titled A process to ensure. It has a section within the article called Time is on your side with useful tips on how to manage time more efficiently. The tips are simple and to the point such as arriving ten minutes early to plan your day. Ten minutes does not seem like a lot but it is very helpful to have those ten minutes to get your assignments and look at your orders and try to come up with a plan. Another tip is making a to do list. This can also be done in those ten minutes that you arrive early. Once you have this to do list, you can see which things are the most important so you can prioritize your patients. An easy but great tip is, learn to say no. Different Methods Of Influence By Amy Schumer And Ellen...

Amy Schumer and Ellen Degeneres: Different Methods of Influence Historically, media figures play a large role in social awareness. Amy Schumer and Ellen Degeneres are both influential figures in gender equality and gay rights, respectively. Whereas Schumer pushes her agenda by being controversial and pushing the boundaries of what is socially acceptable, Degeneres does so via being unintimidating. Each is extremely effective, but Schumer pushes the envelope and Degeneres acts amiable so people are more likely to accept her and gay rights. The social landscape of the time was drastically influenced by Degeneres coming out as lesbian, and later by Schumer’s application of sex humor. Degeneres brought attention to the presence of gay people, and Schumer brought attention to the gender inequalities present in society. There is juxtaposition between how Schumer and Degeneres successfully produce progress for their respective fields of influence. Whereas Schumer pushes gender equality by being controversial, Degeneres pushes gay rights by being appealing. In film and media, there are â€Å"a slew of stereotypical roles for girls and women to (willingly or not) play throughout their lives,† which is both extremely limiting and demeaning. Unrealistic scenarios are constantly created so as to â€Å"[magnify] the gendered expectations [of female characters]† in order to fit the â€Å"[distorted] real world conditions that exist for women† (Ames, Burcon). These societal norms for women in media have

Han China and the Roman Empire Comparison Essay Free Essays

Han China and the Roman Empire Comparison Essay Whereas Han China (202 BCE- 220 CE) and the Roman Empire (~800BCE- 476 CE) were thousands of miles away from each other, they had many similarities and differences. Some of the similarities include peasant rebellions, while the differences are such as woman’s rights and their views on manual labor. Peasant rebellions were very important to the societies of Rome and China. We will write a custom essay sample on Han China and the Roman Empire Comparison Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now The dynasty of Han China itself was formed by a peasant rebellion lead by Wu Ti. Their counterparts in Rome suffered through periods of slave revolts. These shaped these societies dramatically. One of the many differences of these two empires was woman’s rights. While Han China was a highly patriarchal and believed woman were the â€Å"lowest of the low† on the social scale, Rome saw woman still as lesser being, but still had some importance. I believe this is because Rome, unlike China, had more than one god, including goddesses. These woman of a higher power influenced Rome in a way as to see women in a new way, not as scum. Thus making these two cultures different. Another important difference between Han China and the Roman Empire, were their views on manual labor. In Han China, Confucianism supported the manual labor of farmers and other peasants. Meanwhile in Rome, their idea was that manual labor just took away from the slaves. Even with their differences, both Rome and Han China laid the foundation for major religions like Christianity, Daoism, and Confucianism. Those religions are still ruling the world today. They also created lasting legacies that we consider today as Classical Civilizations. How to cite Han China and the Roman Empire Comparison Essay, Essays

When to Leave Your Writer . . . and What To Do Next - The Writers For Hire

WHEN TO LEAVE YOUR WRITER . . . AND WHAT TO DO NEXT Choosing the wrong ghostwriter can be a really miserable experience. Like most new relationships, you both entered into the project with the best intentions – hopes high for a happily ever after. The prize of the perfect manuscript seemed just months away, easily attainable with just a little elbow grease and a few hours of entertaining interviews. Now that the project is under way, though, you’re concerned. Perhaps you’ve received your first draft of your first chapter, and you see things you don’t like. Maybe you’re sensing that your writer doesn’t respond well to edits or might be a little careless about deadlines. By now you’ve invested time and money in the project. You’ve spent hours with this writer. You even kind of like them, and you don’t want to hurt their feelings. At the same time, though, you can’t simply stay quiet and hope for the best. Is this simply a bump in the road to a productive working relationship? Or should you cut ties now? Many of our clients come to us after a poor experience with a previous writer and nearly all of them had stories about early red flags; they’d all spent anxious hours wondering if they should stick with their writer or move on to someone new. In fact, we’ve heard stories like this so often that we thought a few tips on how to deal with bad ghostwriters might be worthwhile. Choosing the Right Ghostwriter Of course, the best way to avoid a bad ghostwriting relationship is through proper due diligence before you start. As with any industry, it’s hard to know how to conduct proper due diligence, when you aren’t 100% sure what to ask. Our best advice surprises many: Writing samples are likely not the most important piece of information to ask for. That’s right. Examples of a writer’s past work are often less informative than you might expect. Now, we aren’t saying not to look at samples, but it is important to understand the drawbacks of relying on samples as an evaluation method: Any samples you review are a reflection of what the prior author has asked for, so the manuscripts may not reflect was you would ask for. Samples provided could be heavily edited, by the prior author or the publisher, so you don’t know what the first draft actually looked like. Talented writers aren’t always talented ghostwriters. And yes, there is a difference: Your writer may dazzle you with an impressive portfolio of say, long-form magazine articles or books written under their own name but they may not have the flexibility and collaborative attitude necessary to write for someone else. Ask for Variety! While samples aren’t the most important thing to look at, they can provide you with a snapshot of your writer’s flexibility. Ask them to send you several samples that showcase different writing styles and cover a variety of different topics. The more variety in the samples, the more likely it is that your writer will be able to adapt to your preferences. So what do you look for? References, references, references – ask the references not only how they felt about quality of work, but how their ghostwriter dealt with edits and feedback. Availability. A lot of ghostwriters take on more than they can handle. Specifically ask how many hours they can give you per week. You want the answer to be at least 10 to 20, if you expect the book to be finished within a year.Expectations. Ask your writer what they expect from you during the relationship. Some writers expect you to do all the research; some writers want you to proofread; some writers will deal with publishing, others won’t. There are no right answers here, but you should be ok with their expectations or you are likely to be unhappy with the arrangement.Problem-solving. Ask about common challenges in a ghostwriter-author relationship, and how they deal with these. If they’ve never had any challenges, then they probably haven’t had enough clients.Personality, not salesmanship. Rememb er that ghostwriters are not necessarily natural salespeople, and you aren’t hiring them for their sales skills. So be careful if you feel like you are going with the firm that just has the best pitch (unless of course you are writing a book on sales, and then that’s probably exactly what you want). I Think I Chose Wrong. Now What? Let’s say you did your due diligence, and you felt confident about your choice of ghostwriter. But you still find yourself staring at your first draft with some level of anguish. What now? First, make sure you really can’t salvage the relationship. Remember, you chose your ghostwriter for a reason. You believed they could do this job – so if they’ve produced something that makes you doubt that, give them a chance to course correct. And make sure you are providing clear edits and feedback. The problem may be that they simply don’t understand what you’re asking for, not that they can’t provide it. Before you hit the â€Å"Fired!† button, it’s helpful to know how bad things really and if it’s possible (or even worth it) to try and fix them. Here are a few guidelines to help you figure out which issues are fixable, and which are showstoppers. Minor typos and factual errors Level of concern: Usually low Reason: Proofreading and fact checking is typically a last step in the book-writing process; a few small errors in a first draft is likely not a sign of a serious problem. Exception: If your document has so many typos and factual errors that it’s distracting, feels like the writer is being lazy, or you think they don’t understand basic grammar, you may have cause for concern. Suggested action: Nothing, unless the issues are drastic. If your draft is a real mess, express your concerns to your writer and ask if they can send just a few more pages of the next chapter before you make a final decision. Minor organizational issues (small) Level of concern: Medium to low Reason: Sometimes a writer gets too close to the subject matter, and glosses over a couple of thoughts or transitions that might make things clearer. The writing just doesn’t quite flow logically, and the ideas feel a bit scattered. If small edits will fix the issues, there is no need to panic. No one is perfect, and everyone needs an editor. Suggested action: Make your edits on your copy, send it back to the writer for reference. If edits were extensive, walk them through your edits verbally and see if their next chapter shows the same level of issues. Style mismatch Level of concern: Medium Reason: If you saw a variety of samples from your writer, chances are they can write in a different style. They just need clearer feedback and direction. Exception: If the draft is a stylistic mess, you can’t imagine anyone possibly liking it, nothing flows, and you aren’t even sure English is their native language, you likely have a much larger issue. Suggested action: Unless the draft is a disaster, explain you don’t like the style and you need a complete rewrite. Show them an example of what you like. Assuming your writer is versatile and open to criticism, you should see a big improvement on the next round. Major organizational issues (big) Level of concern: Medium to high Reason: The clear exchange of ideas is the core of good writing; if your writer can’t convey an idea in a logical manner, it’s possible they might not understand the subject, or they might not understand how you are communicating it. Suggested action: Get on the phone or meet in person to talk through specifically why the draft doesn’t make sense. Tell them you expecting a complete revamp. If they aren’t significantly closer in the next draft, it may be time to bail. You just dont like them Level of concern: High Reason: Maybe they’re passive aggressive about their edits, maybe they don’t do things they say they will, maybe they argue with you about everything. Maybe – through no fault of their own you just don’t like working with them. If your writer doesn’t know how to conduct business professionally, or they are just plain disagreeable, you have a pretty big problem. Suggested action: Give it a couple days – maybe their dog died. If you don’t see a big improvement, get out before you waste any more time. I Had to Leave My Writer. What Do I Do? If you decide that you do have to leave, what can you do to salvage the most work product and transition smoothly to a new writer? Ask for all recordings, transcripts, notes, outlines, anything at all they created during the preparation/planning stages of the project. Recordings of interviews are particularly useful, as they can be transcribed and can save your new writer quite a bit of time. Show any work product to the new writer, even if it’s unusable. It’s helpful to the new writer to understand what not to do (even if it’s obvious). Have a kick-off meeting with your new writer and be sure to thoroughly discuss any outlines, style choices, competitive niche, etc. Remember, if you have had to hire (and fire) your ghostwriter, you’ve learned a lot. Your next relationship is likely to be much more positive. We wish you the best of luck with your new writer, and we humbly remind you that we are never too proud to be your second choice.

Distribution of Power Within Politics essays

Distribution of Power Within Politics essays "An argument against egalitarianism" The most prevalent sentiment of the times is summed up in one word and that is equality. At every level and on all fronts including political, social and economic, the egalitarian gospel has been asserted as the way the light the truth. The rights of the child are considered equal to those of the parent, the pupils to that of the teacher, Jack is as good as his master, a professor of economics political assessment judgement is neither superior nor inferior to that of an illiterate road labourer, each being provided with identical voting power. The obvious difference of nation, race and sex are nothing more than historic hangovers. It is instilled in us from childhood the great evil of inequality while paying no regard to individual differences. The thrust of broader educational guidance is towards a collective responsibility where children are not encouraged to excel so much as they are to fit in. When differences prevail they are condemned, so the All Black scoring a spectacular try hangs his head as he returns to the halfway mark in a facade of modesty and repentance for his individual assertiveness. The egalitarian sentiment underlines the thrusts and trends of this centuries changes in human relationships. Witness the outrage from the professional do-gooder social worker set, on behalf of the victim of societys inequalities lout who knocks over an old lady and steals her purse. The old lady is dismissed as a symbol of societys oppression whilst the thug, we are told, is uttering a cry for help. The do-gooders offer a flood of words and sometimes convincing arguments but as William Blake said He who would do good to another must do it in minute particulars. General good is the plea of the scoundrel, the hypocrite and the flatterer. The seed for equality was planted centuries ago but it was not until the mid...

National Negro Convention Movement

National Negro Convention Movement Background In the early months of 1830, a young freed man from Baltimore named Hezekiel Grice was not satisfied with life in the North because of the hopelessness of contending against oppression in the United States. Grice wrote to a number of African-American leaders asking if freedmen should emigrate to Canada and, if a convention could be held to discuss the issue. By September 15, 1830 the first National Negro Convention was held in Philadelphia. The First Meeting An estimated forty African-Americans from nine states attended the convention. Of all the delegates present, only two, Elizabeth Armstrong and Rachel Cliff, were women. Leaders such as Bishop Richard Allen were also present. During the convention meeting, Allen argued against African colonization but supported emigration to Canada. He also contended that, However great the debt which these United States may owe to injured Africa, and however unjustly her sons have been made to bleed, and her daughters to drink of the cup of affliction, still we who have been born and nurtured on this soil, we whose habits, manners, and customs are the same in common with other Americans, can never consent to take our lives in our hands, and be the bearers of the redress offered by that Society to that much afflicted country. By the end of the ten-day meeting, Allen was named president of a new organization, the American Society of Free People of Colour for improving their condition in the United States; for purchasing lands; and for the establishment of a settlement in the Province of Canada. The aim of this organization was two-fold:   First, it was to encourage African-Americans with children to move to Canada. Second, the organization wanted   to improve the livelihood of African-Americans remaining in the United States.   As a result of the meeting, African-American leaders from the   Midwest organized to protest not only against slavery, but also racial discrimination. Historian Emma Lapansky argues that this first convention was quite significant, citing, The 1830 convention was the first time that a group of people got together and said, Okay, who are we? What will we call ourselves? And once we call ourselves something, what will we do about what we call ourselves? And they said, Well, were going to call ourselves Americans. Were going to start a newspaper. Were going to start a free produce movement. Were going to organize ourselves to go to Canada if we have to. They began to have an agenda. Subsequent Years During the first ten years of the convention meetings,   African-American and white abolitionists were collaborating to find effective ways to deal with racism and oppression in American society. However, it should be noted the the convention movement was symbolic to freed African-Americans and marked the significant growth in black activism during the 19th century. By the 1840s, African-American activists were at a crossroads. While some were content with the moral suasion philosophy of abolitionism, others believed this school of thought was not heavily influencing supporters of the slave system to change their practices. At the 1841 convention meeting, conflict was growing among attendeesshould abolitionists believe in moral suasion or moral suasion followed by political action.  Many, such as Frederick Douglass believed that moral suasion must be followed by political action. As a result, Douglass and others became followers of the Liberty Party. With the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, convention members agreed that the United States would not be morally persuaded to give African-Americans justice. This period of the convention meetings can be marked by participants arguing that the elevation of the free man is inseparable (sic) from, and lies at the very threshold of the great work of the slaves restoration to freedom. To that end, many delegates argued over voluntary emigration to not only Canada, but also Liberia and the Caribbean instead of solidifying an African-American sociopolitical movement in the United States. Although varied philosophies were forming at these convention meetings, the purposeto build a voice for African-Americans on the local, state and national level, was important. As one newspaper noted in 1859, colored conventions are almost as frequent as church meetings. End of an Era The last convention movement was held in Syracuse, NY in 1864. Delegates and leaders felt that with the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment that African-Americans would be able to participate in the political process.

Similarity and Relationship Satisfaction Research Proposal

Similarity and Relationship Satisfaction - Research Proposal Example These results reveal that majority of people view marriage as bondage that hinder their liberty or put extra responsibilities on them. Although marriage is meant to share responsibilities, ideas, happiness and grieves, and rear offspring, people view marriage quite the other way. This anti-marriage phenomenon seems to have erupted as a lack of understanding, a lack that demonstrates absence of similarity essential to sustain marriage relationship. While identification of the factors influencing marital satisfaction is of theoretical interest to social psychologists and potential practical value to clinical psychologists working with married couples, research in this area provided only minimal information about the specific characteristics of stable and/or happy marital relationships and has provided no coherent theory of marital satisfaction. Social psychological theories of love and marriage are, in general, based on the principle of similarity, i.e., that we tend to associate with others who reward us and not associate with those who don't (Walster and Walster, 1978). The theory of Complementarity proposed by Winch (1952) was based on Murray's theory of needs. The theory postulated that within a field of eligible (which necessitates a certain level of similarity) an individual will seek out the person who can offer maximum need-gratification. Specifically, Winch suggests that the need patterns of A will complementary, rather than similar to the need patterns of B. By complementary he means that the needs of A will be different in kind from those in B (Type I Complementarity) or they will be different in intensity (Type II Complementarity) from the needs that are met for B. in one of the first studies, (Winch, Ktsanes & Ktsanes, 1954) findings suggested that for a sample of married couples, individuals tend to select mates whose needs are complementary rather that similar to their own. Subsequently, Winch (1954) attempted to explore additional evidence of complementary needs while also taking into account the contradictory viewpoint of similarity of needs. By examining the correlations between husbands and wives, results showed husband-wife correlations were lower on average that the correlations of randomly paired dyads. Since these findings failed to support the idea of similarity, Winch argued that they supported Complementarity theory. There have been several studies that have tried to replicate Winch's findings, but most research has failed to do so. For example, Bowerman & Day (1956) attempted to replicate Winch's findings of need Complementarity of married couples. Sixty college couples who were engaged or going steadily filled out the Edwards Personal Preference Scale. Results suggest a pattern of similarity rather than complementary. Another study also attempted to address Winch's theory of complementary needs by examining data from standardized psychological tests, to determine whether married couples are characterized by Complementarity of needs, as well as to determine whether there is a positive relationship between the degree of Complementarity and marital happiness (Blazer, 1963). Fifty married couples who were emotionally well-adjusted (i.e. neither partner had history of mental illness) completed the Wallace Marital Happiness Scale and Edwards Personal Preference Scale. Results do not support the complementary nee

The relationship of man and his environment Assignment

The relationship of man and his environment - Assignment Example As a result of the deforestation and destruction to natural habitats, conservation biology emerged as a key field of study in and around the 1980. As such, a new movement within conservation biology emerged which can only be described as environmental ethics (David/Sakhar 2012). These environmental ethicists worked to claim that biodiversity had an â€Å"intrinsic value† on how we as human integrate with and understand the biological spectrum of life on planet earth. As such, this article goes in depth to discuss the different hierarchical taxonomic and categorization of a host of different species that are all dependent upon human actions and interests. A point of view similar to the one put forward by this article demands that a transformation take place with the level of understanding and value that humans place. In effect, the focus on biodiversity and placing a renewed emphasis on caring for, respecting, and restoring the environment has led to a new wave of ecotourism wh ich has helped to raise the overall awareness of the problem among key shareholders the world over. The European campaign on working together for risk has been organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and focuses on the twin concepts of management leadership and worker participation in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). In UK the title translates more accurately as working together on risk management. Judith Hackitt,Chair of HSE, introduces the Healthy Workplaces (Goldstein 2012). â€Å"Following on from.

Symptoms of the Life Changing, Psychoanalytical Phenomenon Essay

She rolls over, still completely exhausted from the minimal forty- five-minute sleep, and hits the snooze on the alarm. She can hardly force her jelly-like legs to the chilled floor. Eyes slightly cracked, open enough to see shapes of objects, she throws on the first clothing items she finds on her floor. Breakfast sounds revolting, but she knows she will need something to keep her going through the day, having been awake until six A.M. with thoughts of worry and obsession over problems the day is sure to bring. As she climbs into her car, she hardly notices her jacket is not zipped in the brisk winter air, and should not be driving from lack of concentration. School is the last place she would prefer to be; with no homework done, she begins to worry again about her achievements she has been working towards. Upon arriving to the first class of the day, her eyes are already shutting as if they were automatic doors, and the stress of the babbled lecture tunes her out. After hard ly making it through the day, she crawls into her bed with mountainous amounts of homework. Not caring, or able to motivate herself, she ignores the learning she was once passionate for, therefore, starting the cycle over for the following day. Does this sound familiar?
